The Gruftenweg: days of empire remembered

Burial customs and the culture of commemoration in Siegen during the imperial age form the focus of this tour along the heritage-protected Gruftenweg, which leads through the Lindenberg cemetery.

The burial sites were installed from 1889 onwards. The parade of 60 tombs, which stretches for 280 metres, has been left untouched by time; some of the vaults are artistically presented. The site is historically significant, and not only from a heritage conservation viewpoint; it stands as an evocative testament to the period in history when Siegen was beginning to emerge as an industrial city. For the purposes of the tour, the city archives of Siegen provided assistance in selecting six burial sites to be representative of the spirit of an epoch.
