Nightwatchman tour: “Hear, people, what I say!”

The year is 1576. Darkness settles on the city, the streets of Siegen are deserted. Just one solitary figure is doing the rounds: Balthasar, the nightwatchman who serves the town authorities.

Wrapped in a black cloak and carrying a lantern and halberd, he intones the hour for the citizens and makes sure their sleep is undisturbed.

“Hear, people, what I say” is a special kind of tour. Details of the history of Siegen and the lives of people in the Middle Ages are imparted through the moody monologue of Balthasar the nightwatchman.

Extra package for groups: conclude the tour at ‘Zum Alten Weinkeller’

The vaulted cellar was built at Hainstrasse 1, on the edge of the old town, as part of the city fortifications early in the 17th century. Today, these ancient walls accommodate the restaurant ‘Zum Alten Weinkeller’. The wine cellar is the perfect setting in which to round off the nightwatchman tour. Naturally, the landlord Dieter Dornseifer offers guests sustenance: Alsatian tarte flambée with bacon and onions, served with a 1/8 glass of Kerner, Dornfelder, Weissherbst or Bacchus.
