Industrial heritage in Siegen
Ore mining, smelting, hammer mills and metalworking: many historical sites in the city bear witness to the rich mining history that made Siegen one of Europe's most important mining regions from the 14th century onwards.
Both in Siegen's city centre and in its districts, especially in Geisweid and Eiserfeld, iron smelting and mining once dominated people's lives. Archaeological finds prove that, for example, several centuries before Christ, Germanic and Celtic tribes smelted iron ore in Geisweid to forge tools and weapons. About 500 years later, smelting works and hammers, coal and ore sheds, and dwellings for the operators sprang up.
In Eiserfeld, contemporary witnesses such as the Reinhold-Forster-Erbstollen visitor mine, the Eiserfelder mining trail and, last but not least, the name of the district itself still bear witness to the rich mining history. If you want to gain a deeper insight into the industrial heritage of the city, this is the place to be. We present the most important industrial sights and tell their story ...
