Shopping in Geisweid

The Siegen district of Geisweid was forged by the steel and iron industry, and by the workers attracted to the sector in the 1960s and 1970s. To this day, Geisweid retains a multicultural charm.

As the Turkish wet markets and speciality markets and the Italian ice cream parlours and pizzerias attest, many migrant workers settled here to raise families – and they continue to define the area.
The special feature of Geisweid is its large shopping mall, where many long-established retailers have stood the test of time over decades (unlike in other parts of town). To this day, locals place their complete trust in a range covering everything from tradition-conscious fashion outlets and cheese retailers to shoe shops, time-honoured bakeries, butchers, knitwear/crocheted goods outlets, opticians, hairdressers and small electrical retailers. Of course there are also many stores covering everyday needs, like the large and modern REWE supermarket which opened at the end of 2020.
