Haus Seel Municipal Gallery
“After my death, my house at Löhrtor 6 in Siegen will go to the city of Siegen. The house may never be sold and may never be rented out. The city of Siegen should establish a museum of fine arts in the house …”. Such was the bequest of Siegen painter Anna Seel in her will dated 1934.
Ten years later, however, the structure was reduced to rubble and ashes in a Second World War bombing raid. In 1962, to honour the wishes of the artist, the city inaugurated the Haus Seel Municipal Gallery at Kornmarkt in the Oberstadt.
Since then, a great deal has happened: alternating art exhibitions and events, workshops, readings, concerts and the city library have all found a base for the long term. The house itself may be somewhat inconspicuous, but thanks to its architecture and its domed rooflights, exhibits can be effectively staged. For many years, the gallery has maintained a close relationship with the art faculty of the University of Siegen. Alongside the changing exhibitions, students and graduates can showcase their creative abilities and learn to present themselves to the general public within a professional exhibition environment.
