St Marien Church & Pfarrer-Ochse-Platz
St Marien Church on the southern slope of the Siegberg is the only remaining sacred building in Siegen from the Baroque era. It was built between 1702 and 1725 by the Jesuits after the great town fire of 1695, which destroyed the Johann Church, and is still a Catholic church today.
Pastor Wilhelm Ochse, after whom the square next to St Marien Church is named, was a long-time clergyman of the parish and resistance fighter during the National Socialist era. He pushed ahead with the reconstruction of the church at full speed after the heavy air raid on Siegen in December 1944. The sacred building was given a massive neo-baroque round-arched vault and the baroque tower dome that still characterises the townscape today.
