Siegen News: “Herrengarten” civic park is a new piece of jewellery in the lower town

Following the demolition of the commercial building on the site of the former pleasure garden of Prince Johann Moritz zu Nassau-Siegen, the grand opening took place just in time for the anniversary city festival on the 30th of August. As a reminder of the splendid baroque and self-contained park, Siegen is linking up with its eventful history and historical roots.

The concrete border of the new Bürgerpark consists of 75 individual parts that are three metres long and weigh up to ten tonnes. They now surround the large meadow area, on which a dance and activity area, play facilities for children and an illuminated platform, which can also be used as a stage, are integrated.

The border offers plenty of seating made of wooden cushions with comfortable backrests and armrests. The “Herrengarten” is also equipped with rubbish bins, bicycle racks, city benches and an e-bike charging station.
Some of the old trees have been preserved. It will be supplemented by seven new, particularly heat-resistant ‘climate trees’, perennials, grasses and other seasonal plants. The opening up of the “Herrengarten” area is part of the city of Siegen's green space concept, which promotes the development of new green spaces by unsealing areas covered in concrete. The aim is to further improve the quality of life in the city centre.

During the city festival weekend, the “Herrengarten” was a hot spot for all visitors. In the meantime, it has established itself as a popular meeting point for the local population, further enhancing the city centre.
