‘Oh Auguste, if only you knew’ – on the road with Siegen's first female night watchman, Lisbet
In May 1568, the Dutch-Spanish War of Succession begins. This has consequences for the small town of Siegen: it loses its night watchman, who enthusiastically joins the army of Wilhelm of Nassau-Orange and goes to war.
His wife Lisbet is unable to dissuade him and is left behind with her seven daughters. After just a few weeks, she receives the dreaded letter with the black mourning border. The widow refuses to be defeated, defies the Siegen magistrate and takes over her late husband's position, now ensuring the citizens of Siegen can sleep peacefully at night with her halberd and lantern. It is astonishing who she encounters at night – often the faces of those stumbling drunkenly out of the tavern are all too familiar to her.
Anyone who wants to know what spicy stories Siegen's first female night watchwoman has to tell and whether she knows how to use the halberd will find this evening tour just right.
