InSIghts
Of Hucksters, Traders, and Merchants – Bakers, Innkeepers, and Rag Dealers
Around the Sieger Town Hall and the Alfred Fissmer Complex, with its impressive Germania monument, was once the city's commercial centre. In the Upper Town there was a row of shops, including the company of the master sheet metal smith Johann Georg Reichwald, who set up his shop in the early 19th century in the Marburger Strasse. The family business is still active in Siegerland's steel trade today.
Historical shots from the calendar "Historic Moments' bring the former commercial center of the Upper Town back to life. The old inns, which were originally built as bakeries, and the new hotel and catering center on the Bahnhofstrasse, which flourished after the railway station was built in 1861. One highlight was the Café Schmidt, whose delicacies are said to have even attracted the pope.
