Löhrsss. Alter Weinkeller: wines to savour in historic surroundings

Opening a wine cellar in beer-loving Siegerland was always going to be a challenge, but in 1995 the Dornseifer family realised there was no better use for a 400-year-old vaulted cellar built as part of Siegen’s city wall – quite an exceptional space.

Their courage was rewarded: at the Alter Weinkeller, guests now enjoy choice German wines direct from the grower as well as quality wines from Italy, France, Spain, Chile and Argentina.

But what is a good wine without the right delicacies? Alongside tasty tapas and snacks, the Alter Weinkeller is best known for its savoury Alsatian tarte flambée, which comes in 10 varieties. Regular tarte flambée parties can be booked, featuring small-scale wine tasting sessions and a nightwatchman tour and concluding back at Hainstrasse.
